About
Uzuncaburç is the ancient city of Diocaesarea, spread inside a plateau village at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, 30 km north of Silifke. In the city, the centre of the Olba priest-kings, the 36-columned Temple of Zeus Olbios, a colonnaded street, a fountain building, a theatre and a ceremonial gate still stand. The five-storey Hellenistic tower, 22 metres high, which gave the village its name, has stood upright for 2300 years.
The ancient fabric is intertwined with today's village life; seeing village houses and a coffeehouse among the columns is what makes this place special. The temple surroundings can be toured with MüzeKart. The road is mountainous but asphalted; beware of fog and ice in winter.
