About
Cleopatra's Gate is the only monumental gate to have survived from the city walls of ancient Tarsus. Although it is associated with the rumour that the Egyptian queen Cleopatra entered through this gate when she came to Tarsus to meet Marcus Antonius, the present structure dates to the late Roman/Byzantine period and its actual name is the 'Sea Gate'.
The gate stands at the entrance of the historic city fabric, which has been made a pedestrian zone; right nearby, the Ancient Road, the historic Tarsus houses and St. Paul's Well can be visited. Entry is free; with its night illumination it is suitable for photography.
